The sometimes y thing always throws me. I went to a new school in 3rd grade and they taught the vowels differently than my other school, and I remember feeling stupid because I didn't know their way.
I can't remember what the difference was, just that it made me feel dumb.

Thanks, as I was never ever ever going to get that.

Every good boy deserves fun.
Next you'll be telling me they have a mnemonic for the alphabet.
Set to Mozart, I believe.
Oh, righty-tighty, lefty-loosey. I use that all the time.
Every good boy deserves fudge.
And if he's really good, he grows up to be the Elf Foreman, but only at the Fudge factory.
Well, that's because boys can't get more stupid.
You're channelling Julia again, aren't you?

When I was about six, I remember reading "Turn Left to Open -->" on the rim of a peanut butter jar, and being terribly confused. The arrow pointed to the RIGHT. Stoopid peanut butter company!
It was much later...years, even...that I realized they meant turn the lid left like turning a car's steering wheel left. As a small kid, I didn't put my hand over the top of the lid to grip it, my hand was too small for that. I put my thumb and index finger along the lid's rim to grip it, and my other hand on the jar, so it was the lid's rim I was focused on.
It doesn't really flow but a spelling mnemonic taught by one of my HS nuns that I use to this day is:
Desert = Sahara Dessert = Strawberry Shortcake
