When I was about six, I remember reading "Turn Left to Open -->" on the rim of a peanut butter jar, and being terribly confused. The arrow pointed to the RIGHT. Stoopid peanut butter company!
It was much later...years, even...that I realized they meant turn the lid left like turning a car's steering wheel left. As a small kid, I didn't put my hand over the top of the lid to grip it, my hand was too small for that. I put my thumb and index finger along the lid's rim to grip it, and my other hand on the jar, so it was the lid's rim I was focused on.

As a kid, all that confused me, because when you're turning something, the top is going one way and the bottom is going the other way. You might as well say "Turn Up to Open," meaning turn so the right side goes up.
