I don't know the answer to that.
I think coffee has more negative effects than caffeine, what with the acid stomach and all. I don't think No-Doz gives people acid stomach. I could be wrong.

I think it would be fascinating if marijuana/hashish had been introduced to Western culture at the same time as coffee. I'm betting everybody would have become habituated to its use in exactly the same way as for alcohol and coffee/tea.

There was some mid-Eastern country that banned coffee in (IIRC) the 1500s or 1600s. They were afraid that folks would sit around in cafes drinking coffee and planning revolution.
They should have just introduced lattes and wireless Internet.
