I seem to recall hearing they actually had a special mold built to create the smushfacedness on the show.
If they're hollow, that makes things really difficult. Maybe very carefully and steadily carve your way into it with a soldering iron? Start in the middle and work your way out, then use said hot exacto knife to flatten the edges? I don't know. Definitely something you'd want to do where you had ventilation.
Someone with an actual smooshfaced lion just needs to give me one. It's very simple.
I would take a wedge (like you use for splitting wood) and heat it up and then slowly press it into the silly little lion's face.
I did not ever buy a regular lion because only a smooshed face one would do. My love is purer.
Oh and ita, I heard some reference to a man pie on tv this weekend and thought of Colin pie.

Man pie as in guys with pie as in that link I got in trouble for posting here?
But not a guy with a pie.
see above, ita, and contain your linkage.
I have occasionally considered attempting Smush on the one Matt gave me, but it's so perfect that I don't want to gild the lily and/or break it.
But, it may be possible to heat the lion in water, then do the smushing. Seriously, if you look to the model horse remaking communities for advice, it's probably fairly doable. (Mind, those are only hollow in the middle, but still. Much can be done.)
