Joss says what he means at the time, but he also doesn't lock himself in. He's actually mentioned not giving too much back story in the shows, so that he's not written into a corner.

What Joss mostly says is, "Trust the tale, not the teller," and that's something he said at the Bronze, I think, so maybe it isn't fandom wide. What it meant to me is, believe was, "Believe what my shows say onscreen, not what I might say in random interviews."

And all I'm saying I believe Cordelia assumed the line ran from Buffy to Kendra to Faith, and that season 7 made me wonder otherwise, and Joss saying "It goes like this unless I change my mind" doesn't affect my opinion at all.
I'm not searching to disbelieve what I've seen onscreen. My earliest comments in today's discussion acknowledged that believing the line now goes through Faith is the easiest. I still do believe that. It is just that I have also seen things that might be contradictory onscreen, including Buffy getting the axe that features in Fray, and the FE being able to be more assertive, because of some imbalance caused by Buffy.
