[NAFDA] "There will be an occasional happy, so that it might be crushed under the boot of the writer." From Zorro to Angel (including Wonderfalls and The Inside), this is where Buffistas come to anoint themselves in the bloodbath.

Wait, is this real-world child support, where the money goes to buy food for the kids, or MRA fantasyland child support where the women just buy Ferraris and cocaine? -Jessica

Not listening to your craxy talk.

Okay, but will you explain why you refuse to believe it?

Life moves pretty fast. You don't stop and look around once in a while, you could miss it.

I can see how the fan support made a difference. Fans=$$ to the studios. Most fans follow actors, which is why Julia Roberts or George Clooney or whoever gets movie and production deals. Organized, vocal support of a writer or a director is MUCH rarer and I am sure made Joss a more attractive person to do business with. Universal didn't want to be in business with him because they like his talent--they wanted to be in business with him because it was good for their pocketbook, and it's good for their pocketbook because he brings fans to the theater.

Per ita's post - D'oh, I own two of them.

But did they all come out before the Firefly DVDs?

Visilurking

Honestly, none of us know all the factors that went into the DVD release and the movie. You certainly know more than I do. But, can you honestly say that without the visible fan support there'd be a Serenity movie coming out in Sept? Whether it's a tangible connection like someone tallying up the signatures on a petition, or something less tangible like giving Joss and/or the FF actors the resolve and dedication to stick with the Big Damn Movie idea and see it through, I refuse to believe that visible fan support played no role at all in what has developed. It may not have been the biggest factor. But without it, no freakin' way.

And in my mind, visible fan support = Allyson, Kristen, Kiba and anyone I'm forgetting. If I'm wrong, then, just tough. So there.

ETA: Also, what Robin said.

If I'm reading the release dates right, yes, by a couple of months.

Who? moi??

I think the history of fan strength may come from Bo whatsher name who started the great "bring back Star Trek" letter campaign. Since then it has become popular to think that the fans drive ressurections.

Also I am beginning to think that DVDs don't come from TV shows, but TV shows are there to promote DVDs. Lots of money in them. Once you have the fan base reacting to a show, no need to keep it on the air (cynical)

This is not to take anything away from the talents of K and A. The charity drives have been wonderful to watch. I like the ads very much too.

Btw, who started the drive to buy Firefly DVDs for the overseas forces?

making her home at bronzebeta.com since 2001

I think it is pretty seductive to think the fans had the actual power to Make. Things. Happen. and they feel vindicated if anything positive happens.

Take the Enterprise. I'm sure there are many fans of that show, but is there a specific number that would make TPTB sit up and take notice and revive the show? 100,000, one millon, several million?

I do think that fans definitely create help create more awareness, or create a buzz that gets other people interested and that must help somehow down the road.

How much money would the Serenity movie have to make for there to be sequels? Are sequels dependent totally on ticket sales or are there other factors?

Interview with Tim about The Inside Cancellation

But, can you honestly say that without the visible fan support there'd be a Serenity movie coming out in Sept?

It's what I've been saying. Over and over and over again. If you mean "DVD sales" as visible fan support, then yes, I think that helped Universal's decision to greenlight Serenity. But Kristen and I didn't campaign to buy DVDs. We were all done campaigning by January.
