White panties show through much more loudly than pale pink or the light beige. I think I learned not to wear white panties under white pants, long long long before I learned the white-shoes season rules.
I did not know that.

Pale pink is no closer to my skin tone than white is, and I'm a "white" person.Nor is it closer to mine. But it's not a bright as white, so it doesn't show through, as much.
I wear whatever knickers happen to be clean on any given day, with whatever trousers are closest to me on my bedroom floor. I can't begin to describe how low matching the two is on my list of priorities. But then, I work in a place where I'm lucky if I don't get a bucketful of mud down said knickers by the end of the day.
(stares in confusion at people who wear all-white skirts.)
Or any all white clothes.
I solve all this by just not wearing white.
I agree that the right coloured underwear (top or bottom) shows through less than white. White's an obvious compromise. However, I've never found the right colour underwear, so it's always "Oh, she's wearing brown/beige/yellow panties!" I figure the simplest choices were a) wear opaque bottoms or b) match the clothes to the undies.
I am trying to be adventourous in my clothing choices. I am sick to death of jeans, black or brown pants/skirts. Hence, my new white skirt and my new white linen capri pants.
I like white and off-white skirts. They're summery.
skirts should be lined. that is my answer, as for pants. I am much less likely to have white pants. I think the only ones I have are jean capris.
