I felt the same way when my grandma developed CHF, but for what it's worth, she lived for a long time after that. You and your whole family have all my sympathies, and my wishes for strength.

The dog was stuck under the bed again when I got home. I bought the bed lift things. They fit posts up to 3". My bed has legs that are 4" square. The dog continues to suffer. Or will tomorrow, probably. Right now he's contentedly sprawled on the carpet in front of the TV.

Does the dog have a crate? Even if you're not a fan of shutting him in it, it can be the basis for a good domestic cave/room of his own.

If your crate is one of those airport crates with the more solid sides? Just take the door off and make it comfy. Put it where he feels safe (by the bed) -- he'll use it.
You can try feeding him in his crate to get him used to the idea.

No crate. As much as he likes being under furniture, he hates crates. He developed a fear of ladders and metal gates because they are reminiscent of the hated crate.
