Japan dreams of robot moon base in 2025
Japan wants to help build a lunar base and populate it with advanced versions of today's humanoid robots by around 2025, according to the head of the nation's space agency.
The idea is more than a pipe-dream; it is part of a 20-year plan, called JAXA Vision 2025, that was drawn up by Keiji Tachikawa, a former president of Japan's largest mobile operator NTT DoCoMo, who is now president of the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA).
As part of the plan, Japan would use advanced robotic technologies to help build the moon base, while redeveloped versions of today's humanoid robots, such as Honda Motor Co. Ltd.'s Asimo and Sonys Qrio, could work in the moon's inhospitable environment in place of astronauts, he said in a recent interview.
Japan's lunar robots would do work such as building telescopes and prospecting and mining for minerals, Tachikawa said.
...
"Honda could develop automobiles for the moon. Many products that are made here on earth can be adapted to operate on the moon," Tachikawa said.
I want my flying Honda moon car.
Why cars, for a place with such low gravity? I would want a giant mechanical grasshopper. It's got to be more efficient than barrelling along on the ground, right? And no need to build roads.
And no need to build roads.
And now I'll be quoting Doc Brown in my head all day.
"Roads? Where we're going we don't need roads."
Okay, other place thoroughly explored. Moving guys all earnestly agree that my cube was not part of this weekend's move and should still be standing. Which it is, so that's good. They also agree that my chair and file cabinet should not have been moved. Not so good.
Neither chair nor file cabinet has been found, despite the fact that our head move guy basically led me around the entire office, checking every file cabinet in the place. It was sort of entertaining, barging in on people who were quietly doing their work, and saying, "Is this your file cabinet?" I think we probably came off like HUAC, except with file cabinets.
I also keep remembering stuff that was in the damn file cabinet, but luckily, I think all of my personal stuff made it out.
Still miss my chair.
It's got to be more efficient than barrelling along on the ground, right?
Sure, if you've taken your dramamine. It's space! Why can't I have an aircar?
