Lorne: Once the word spreads you beat up an innocent old man, well, the truly terrible will think twice before going toe-to-toe with our Avenging Angel. Spike: Yes. The geriatric community will be soiling their nappies when they hear you're on the case. Bravo.

'The Cautionary Tale of Numero Cinco'

Fan Fiction II: Great story! Where's the sequel?

This thread is for fanfic recs, links, and discussion, but not for actual posting of fanfic.

Calli: My people have a saying. A man who trusts can never be betrayed, only mistaken.Avon: Life expectancy among your people must be extremely short.

On a lighter note - a Beatrice-centric Divine comedy fan fiction. (A light X-over with AS You Like It. Dante's Beatrice is also the Beatrice from "As You Like It" and makes journey's through Hell, Purgatory and Paradise comparable to Dante's . This passage from her journey through hell is one of the best in the Fic:

On that farther shore, they set off through a cemetery full of burning crypts. People kept popping out of them and arguing with each other over heresies. Several times Penthesilea held Beatrice back from getting involved. Penthesilea said, "The Trojan war was over love and honour and wealth, and it lasted over ten years."

Beatrice gripped her hands and her lips and didn't argue with all the people who were wrong.

I'm terrifically busy with my ennui.

You know, sometimes if you're very good, and very patient, and wait a good ten years after the source canon ends, astolat will come along and start writing in a fandom you enjoy. (Harry/Draco, at the moment.)

"...and then Legolas and the Hulk destroy the entire Greek army." - Penny Arcade

Dana, I've been enjoying those too, although they're...trope-y, I guess...enough that I'd wondered if they were older fics reposted to AO3. I like them a lot for the skill and the worldbuilding, even though I don't ship canon!Harry/canon!Draco. Reading the one with the gate to the land of the dead, I was half convinced Harry would get through and find Hermione had taken over.

"I remember when they eventually introduced that drug kingpin who murdered people and smuggled drugs inside snakes and I was like 'Finally. A normal person.'” —RahvinDragand

I don't think shipping the pairing is needed to get into her fics. I'm sure not a Wincest fan, but found her SPN stories very enjoyable regardless.

She did lose me for a while with the underage American Idol RPF though. shudder

So come, my friends, be not afraid/We are so lightly here/It is in love that we are made; In love we disappear

Was it the underage or the American Idol that lost you?

RPF in general sends me scrambling for the back button, but I'm sure the fact that some of it featured a minor who looked about 12 speeded up my mouse click.

Makes sense.

I'm terrifically busy with my ennui.

That feeling when you accidentally read 250,000 words of fanfic by Thanfiction, AKA Andy Blake, FKA Amy Player, FKA Victoria Bitter.

And it was in that irritating place between "scratches an itch I have" and "I disagree with choices and characterizations so much that I will stop reading."

Woops, Dana. I read DAYD a few years back, and yeah, I got more & more uncomfortable with it as it went on. He's not untalented, but I really don't need to see so much of his ID.

Exactly. It was decent, but then themes kept creeping out that were making me unhappy, and then the final battle was just gruesome.

Then I got to the end, and the author's note said "Andrew", and I thought, "Of course it was written by a guy." Which is not fair, but the gender politics were ooky, and the whole thing was so militarized.

And then this morning, the penny dropped.
