Hey, Dana, there's a misattributed story in the update of the recs.
Damn. And I thought I fixed all the outstanding oopses last night.

This thread is for fanfic recs, links, and discussion, but not for actual posting of fanfic.
Hey, Dana, there's a misattributed story in the update of the recs.
Damn. And I thought I fixed all the outstanding oopses last night.
I got your e-mail and replied earlier. I'll fix it when I get home; thanks for letting me know. (Whoops.)
Oh good. I felt my alternatives were "nagging pain in the tuchus" or "taking credit for something I didn't write," and while both suck only one gets me sent to the special hell. Thanks!
Clearly, it'll have to just be your own big AU.
Bleargh. Really, all I want to do is change the characterization and backstory so Daniel is hot. ter. Hardly seems worthwhile, since I don't have a plot as such.
There's a new lj community -- sg_research -- and there's an interesting discussion about whether or not Sheppard is Air Force. People write him that way, but evidentally in Rising when he lists what he's flown they are all choppers and some are exclusive to the Army. His uniform isn't helpful to determining which he belongs to and then they are in the Atlantis uniforms (which are rather ugly and just not flattering on most people) so you can't tell from that. Also Sheppard being in the Army would explain the skills he showed in The Storm/The Eye (and other episodes).
So coming back from lunch I had a plot bunny (which I plan to write) of John and Rodney in bed, post sex, and Rodney says something snarky about John and the Air Force and John corrects him "the Army" which leads to bickering and bantering over the subject and why Rodney didn't figure it out.
And then they have sex.
shalott had this debate in her LJ once. I think the decision was "Air Force...no, Army...no, Air Force...fuck it, let's just make them have sex."
It doesn't really bother me either. I've never had a problem with the characters having skill sets that they shouldn't, it's a show about space travel through a gate with snake like aliens with a god complex and little gray aliens and albino space vampires.
I'd probably have more problems if the show was grounded in a little more reality. I've pretty much stopped watching CSI and partly because they wouldn't be conducting interviews! and all the other stuff!
Hey there - did everyone already know Shalott has an original novel coming out? Most excellent. Moreover, you can hear her (and Lee Goldberg and co) on the radio, discussing fanfic.
Didn't listen to the radio show, but did read her comments on it. Lee Goldberg apparently said exactly what I would expect him to say regarding fanfic.(I'm on a mystery listserv and a few months back the subject of fanfic came up, which led to Mr. Goldberg's rant in several parts about how awful it is.)
Lee Goldberg, eh?
He's a wonder, that man. It seems to me that he must be insecure & unhappy with his whole writing-professional-fanfic gig, to be so foamingly anti-fanfic. He is at such pains to say "this isn't what I do! this is bad and disgusting and not art, not creative, not valid! But what I do is different!!!" It's pitiful, in a way.
Or maybe it's simpler than that. Maybe it's just that the existence of free fanwritten fanfic makes him fret that his own income is at risk? But, really, it's not like there's an enormous fanwriting community for Diagnosis Murder, or what have you, is it?
