I have avoided that by deciding that I will not look at anyone's recs, as I have a system worked out.
Except that one time when I saw one of my fandoms mentioned, but it wasn't my story. Yeah, a little bit crushed.

Does anyone else wade through recs posts and feel their ego getting crushed bit by snivelling bit as their stories refuse to show up in anyone's recs?
The previous three years, I wrote in a comics fandom and two anime/manga fandoms, and those aren't fandoms that tend to show up much in recommendations posts. I just assume I'm not going to get recommended, and then I'm pleasantly surprised if it happens.
Anne, it's not just you. I am so guilty of that. I felt better when I searched del.icio.us for the story title and saw more people had it saved than had commented. Try that!

Oooh, I should do that. But my recipient really liked the story, thank goodness!

Yes. This. That's always nice. My pinch hit recipient was effusively happy and the main recipient posted in her LJ that she was thrilled to bits that I picked the prompt I did, but that she'd been up for 48 hours straight and would read and review once consciousness had returned.
It's going to take me forever to work through the stories even in the few fandoms I know.
Made of win: A Buffista posted a comment on one of my stories (without knowing it's mine, of course.)
I LOVE when that happens. It's balm to my writerly ego when my friends comment on my stories without knowing it's me. Yes! I do not suck!
How do I love thee, SGA crack!fic? Let me count the ways... [link]
Oh, those parantheticals are brilliance. and this is for the win:
"Sheppard, are you talking to your hair again?" McKay asked.
"What? No," Sheppard lied.
I am slowly coming out from my yuletide coma. and this is just the first round of story-reading, too. The next is when I go back and re-read some stuff for canon and then go read the fic I skipped the first time. Ah, perfected systems.
Oh. Dear. God.
Did everyone already read the Sesame Street Porn?
I haven't laughed so hard in MONTHS. I mean, it was horrified, brain-go-boom laughter, but...OMG. See, I never did read that Carebear S&m story, but this....good heavens. Bert. Ernie.
...It's so horrifyingly in character, that's the thing.
