Fan Fiction II: Great story! Where's the sequel?
This thread is for fanfic recs, links, and discussion, but not for actual posting of fanfic.
Who has recs?
Sorry, but despite being subscribed to the fic community, I've skimmed past most of it. All of the slash pairings leave me pretty cold, as does LoVe on the whole (I like it in canon, but not in fic for some reason.)
There is no novel length fic in Veronica Mars fandom, not yet anyway. (Now, if only shaye ever finishes her noir casefile she's threatening to unleash onto the world...) I've read a few multi-part plotty stories, which left me largely unimpressed, and the rest of the fic out there are mostly of the unbearably schmoopy Logan/Veronica variety. (I refuse to type the... you know, the name. The one that makes me want to KILL KILL KILL.) It also annoys me that the fic part of the fandom is entirely LJ based, as I hate linking to stories on LJ. [/crankypants]
That said, I've read some nice short fic. Boyfriend In Coma has 4 or 5 mostly Logan-centric stories on her fic-LJ, all of which I like a lot (esp. "A Past Is A Prologue" and "Snark Never Goes Out of Fashion".) [link]
Yahtzee has a killer story about the aftermath of the finale here. [link] Brilliant concept and deeply cynical in a scarily plausible way.
Adorable Wallace vignette set post WoCD: [link]
A fab Lianne story, sharp and brittle. [link]
That's pretty much all of the next BSO update. There is also a rec community in LJ called vm_fic, which will probably help you glean out the worst of the lot, but they rec a bit too indiscriminately, I found. [link]
Shaye linked to a few more stories a while back on her LJ. Lemme see; here we go.
While I'm here, some novel-length story in other fandoms;
Rheanna (of the Angel-fic fame) posted a kick-ass Battlestar Galactica fic a couple months ago. Well-plotted, with a daring central conceit. (In fact, anything Rheanna has ever written is guaranteed to be good. Her stories are here. Mostly Angel and Stargate SG-1. My favorites are "Vivere" (OMG so friggin' brilliant) and "Splinter", and out of the Stargatey ones, "Roses for December".)
Tara LJC has a few good long Firefly stories. Not sure whether I'd call them novel-length, but they read like episodes of the show. I'm particularly fond of Lex Talionis. That Old Yeh Shen Story is quite good, too.
I don't really read Harry Potter except for this weird Snape/Hermione thing I have, which obviously is not everyone's cup of tea. But I do like this one where Snape goes blind and Hermione had to cox him out of despair and teach him how to read braille OMG! (Shuddup. It's a good story, damnit.)
Edited because I can't do links.
this one where Snape goes blind and Hermione had to cox him out of despair and teach him how to read braille OMG!
...and now I'm seeing blind Snape on the rowing team, with hardassed-yet-caring Hermione bellowing instructions at him through a wee loudspeaker thingy...
t /pedantic cow
(Sorry, but the image just made me giggle and giggle and giggle.)
D'oh! I knew I spelled that wrong, but I had a total brain-fart moment about the actual correct spellage.
Also, heee! at your image.
I was chatting with some people about SGA and I almost went into my rant against smushed names when they started refering to pairings that way. McShep, McBeck. Please, McStop.
Mostly I randomly read stories off Wraithbait. Some were okay, although I want to know what the deal is with the characters being centaurs or werewolves. Not that I read the stories because they have no appeal to me.
I did read a nice little story (I forgot the name and the author), it was a threesome McKay/Sheppard/Beckett. The basic premise was: it's been awhile since they had contact with Earth, long enough for people to start pairing off (including same sex). Beckett gets this ancient device stuck to him and can't take it off, they find a ZPM and can go home. Except Beckett (Who will die because of the device), then McKay and Sheppard stay...they get involved, month later people come back. They live happily ever after.
However, there's no mention about the military's view on same sex relationships and how this might effect all the personnel. It's not mentioned at all and none of the three seemed to even think about what the implications would be about their relationship.
Especially since it was mentioned that McKay and Sheppard have a tendancy to make out in the hallways.
"Shadow of His Wings" kicks ass! Whoever recommended it, thank you for causing me to annoy my husband because I stared at the screen all day yesterday and still didn't get it finished. Yay for thumbdrives, because I intend to have the rest of it open in a window here at work because I Must Know!
God, I hope the author finishes this.
As Michael saw it, it was as if Nikita was being stoical and complaisant, like if the fire within her had been dowsed and he hated this Nikita. This was a Nikita reminiscent of the little girl her mother abused and Michael wanted that Nikita gone. And when he was spending time out of mind, he felt she was basically… annoying.
Oh, Michael. We always find her annoying.
At this moment Michael was aware of the little time he had to spend as Nikita’s loving-husband, cognizant that his dementia was about to take center stage again. He needed to make her understand his feelings in a clear concise fashion, fearful that the other Michael, the oblivious one, would kick her to the curve after taking advantage of her.
Wanna bet that "clear concise fashion" is going to involve athletic sex?
He held both her wrists in a vice grip
An oldie-but-goodie.
This man before her was not the funny Michael, the nice Michael or even the real Michael; instead a strange Michael – except for his perfect naked body, stood before her.
Well, yeah, except for that.
When the nurse approached the heart lung machines, Nikita realized that Michael was being kept alive by the use of artificial means and she quietly wept at the realization.
Her thoughts went to the last time they spoke and she thought, "You knew this didn't you, you knew you were going to die... I won't have it Michael, get off your ass you insensitive boob - I am with child!"
Live, damn you! LIIIIIIVE!
How many Michaels and Nikitas are there in this story?
Oh those coma patients, so insensitive.
