Fan Fiction II: Great story! Where's the sequel?
This thread is for fanfic recs, links, and discussion, but not for actual posting of fanfic.
I started a discussion over here: Anne W. "Buffista Fic 2: They Said It Couldn't Be Done." Apr 7, 2007 7:42:48 am PDT
I was thinking that a b.org-specific fic exchange/challenge/what-have-you might be fun, and I wanted to get other peoples' thoughts on the matter. I'd be interested to hear from people who might write fic, and people who'd be happy just to enjoy what's written.
Dear fanfic writers,
If you are posting a story based on an episode that hasn't aired in the US, Do Not Put A Honking Big Spoiler For That Ep in your summary! A spoiler warning for the story does no good if it follows the spoilery summary.
Sheesh.
(This is not aimed at any of the fine fic writers on this board, but is a vent against inconsiderate people)
never mind. I meant to do an search and hit Post instead.
In addendum to Sheryl's oh-so-fun peeve, I feel the need to add my lesser and snottier peeve at people who write fanfic based on oral reports of spoilers, and publish same, before the episode has aired (anywhere). Which, actually, has been warned very well and politely and with no summary-woes that I have seen. Just -- oh honey, please do your trig homework instead, will you?

I'm sorely tempted to write another John Winchester story just to show people why he's not the Worst Dad on the Planet. Except I do have other stories to write, too, ones less inspired by grumpy responses to meta discussions.

But if someone were to offer you a cookie, or a nickel, or something, that would give you another inspiration, wouldn't it?
'Cuz I could do that.
But I want to read another John Winchester story!
Semi-related, but not important enough to post in the place where I was wondering about this, I actually did get a chance to ask my BiL if his dad (working to middle-class, brought up in Virginia and Texas) came back from Vietnam liking the food, and if he then exposed his children to it.
The answer wound up being yes, and yes, pretty much the day the first local Vietnamese place opened (which, I have also learned, was sometime before 1977, as BiL was still in high school at the time).
So, clearly, now I want to see a story where John takes the kids for pho.

Since I think I was the only person who dared to criticize daddy Winchester in the character discussion, I can't help but feel some of that may be aimed in my direction... I have read fic that portrayed him sympathetically. A couple of wee!Winchester stories, until I stopped reading them (a personal quirk, because I OD'd on the sugar content). There was one story that did the story of Dean and the waitress in -- Tampa, I think it was? -- (it was taken from a throwaway line in Croatoan), and it actually showed a good relationship between John and a Sam who was about 14 or so.
But my personal perspective is one of identifying with the guys' perspective (someone, I forget who, suggested that people probably either view this argument from the point of view of the parent or the boys). I don't think that's really unexpected, as the show is presented from their point of view, and it works for me. I enjoy it, and if Sam and I want to keep nursing our grudge against John, well, that's up to us. You are of course entirely free to view things from the totally opposite viewpoint. And to keep writing stories for the rest of us to read.
Variety of opinion is good, I find. I only tend to get irritated with people when they turn a character they don't like into a Villain. Which I find common in fic.

I actually like John, and I'm in that state as well. Kind of makes it hard to write one of your own, you know?

I suspect that Consuela is probably referring to livejournal discussions rather than anything here.
Quite like how I'm not talking about any of you when I say that I really wish people would stop posting graphic incest outside of a cut tag.
