Fan Fiction II: Great story! Where's the sequel?

This thread is for fanfic recs, links, and discussion, but not for actual posting of fanfic.

Well not canonically, no, but this is transformative fiction.

Hey--if you had to show one fanvid to someone who says there's no way to view Jack & Daniel as Jack/Daniel (because, really, Daniel's a surrogate for the son he lost--whatEV), which would you pick?

"Fuck Western ideologically-motivated gender identification!" Sulu gasped, and came.

Daniel's a surrogate for the son he lost????

!!!!

Not that I have a problem with people favouring the platonic view of their friendship, not in the slightest, but, but... Daniel's a surrogate for the son he lost????

I mean, whatchamacallim, Skar, yes, fine, Charlie-surrogate. Also the wee bald boy who was sort of Ikea-made by aliens just in order to talk to Jack, and who was all 'can my name be Charlie? Can I be your son?' Yes. Fine. But Jack-Daniel just isn't a father-son vibe. Good grief. Yes, Jack may be a bit older, but he very clearly doesn't see himself as an Old Bloke! He's all Action Bloke!

Right, having had my unsubstantiated gut reaction, I'd be fascinated to hear her (his?) case for a father-son sublimation. I guess that it's only like slashing, in its own WTF kind of way. (Apart from the OMG CrazyHead, you're wronger than Captain Wrong part of it, obviously.)

Also would be delighted to be pointed at some nice fanvids...

I don't know about fanvids, but wouldn't a viewing of "Abyss" run counter to the father/child interpretation?

Hmm. There's Destina & Carol S.'s stuff; between them they have a number of Jack/Daniel vids. I can't think of any offhand that would necessarily convince someone who wasn't already reading the dynamic that way.

I tend to think that if you are resistant to a pairing, a vid emphasizing that pairing isn't going to convince you--it'll just piss you off that the maker of the vid so misinterprets the text.

ETA: although one of my favorite vids about the Jack-Daniel relationship---not a slashy one--is Barkley's "Lucky One". It's on her website, linked off her LJ. I like that a lot, because it's messy and complex and even resentful.

I did not have your lyrical way with words, but the essence of my astonishment was the same.

Abyss was exactly what I brought up! He's watched a lot of Stargate, but only had a fuzzy memory of that one. I told him that every (I figure hyperbole wouldn't hurt) Jack/Daniel video had at least one shot of Daniel in the cream sweater.

He wasn't slash-proof -- he did think there was a Teal'c/Daniel vibe.

But the paternal thing floored me.

Hmm. Well, worst comes to worst, I get to see great vids. I'll go have a look.

I really like Barkley's vids--the Babylon 5 vid she did for last year's Vividcon (Dancing in the Light) is particularly fun. She's got a less solemn touch than a lot of vidders, more willingness to poke fun at the show while still enjoying the hell out of it.

I was charmed (albeit somewhat perplexed) by the fannish sensibility of many of the music choices -- it's like the director was trying to vid Canada. --loligo on the Olympic Opening Ceremonies

I think that's a buyable interpretation of their interaction in the movie, for what it's worth--not as much as Skaara, certainly, but I don't think the writers gave him the last name of Jackson for no reason, you know? But, er, not so much nowadays.

As for vids... I think J/D is actually a tough pairing to do conversion vids for, because they aren't all that sexual onscreen. Most of my favorites pretty much assume you're coming with the slash googles pre-installed, you know? But here are some I've recced before. Mind you, some of these could be watched as friendship as well; depends on your point of view.

Mmm, I love Bed. I think that's my favorite. Or tied for favorite, anyway.

Bed cracks me up, because for the length of the vid I totally buy that the three of them have the most uncomfortable triangle ever. And then Jack says "screw this, I'm gonna go have sex with Teal'c." Which, you know, I gotta say, so long as you avoid any potential vengeance issues he's way more low-maintenance than the other two.

I know! It's pretty slick.
