The term reality-based means that it is consistent with the available evidence. It is consistent with those aspects of the world that we can see or hear or touch or otherwise measure.

Some Buffistas seem inclined to view the evolution debate as a conflict between faith and science. This is not true. If people want to say that their faith is more important to them than the evidence of this world then they will not find scientists inclined to debate them, because their point of view lies outside the domain of science. But the controversy over teaching evolution versus creationism is different. Creationists insist that their view should be taught because it IS consistent with the available evidence of this world. In taking this view they show themselves to be profoundly ignorant and irrational. This is not a matter of faith but of data. We should not pander to this nonsense.

If I only had a brain...

Why do newspapers still run B.C.? It isn't as if it's funny.

aka "The artist formerly known as Corwood Industries."

I used to wonder if the people who write that even know what "B.C." means. But that's pointless speculation. One might as well waste time wondering who finds humor or comfort in the Family Circus.

Wait, is this real-world child support, where the money goes to buy food for the kids, or MRA fantasyland child support where the women just buy Ferraris and cocaine? -Jessica

We should not pander to this nonsense.

Agreed. We're really moving towards a dark age in the US. I don't understand why the zealots were suddenly allowed to legislate their crazy.

I'd like to beat the shit out of whomever it was who left the back door open so the crazy could blow in.

Jessica, I think the NYT heard your complaint about fluff articles, and now they're printing some real news.

And then Ortus came and said "It's Ortin' time" and they all Orted off into the sunset

I don't understand why the zealots were suddenly allowed to legislate their crazy.

Because they were elected into power.

And it wasn't sudden. It seems that way because we didn't see it coming, but it's been building in the background for years now. Scary stuff.

Speaking of zealots, apparently Bush has learned something about sticking his authority where it doesn't belong. His office annouced they won't fight the court decision to allow the 13 year old girl in state custody to have her abortion. [link]

edit to note that is Jeb! Bush

It was me Allyson. I apologise. I thought I'd just crack it to let in a little whimsy. I didn't realize it would turn into full blown craxy.

"All the news that's fit to -- ooh look, something shiny!"

(The really funny thing? I've seen the Bronx Zoo penguin feeding, and it's crap. You want adorable penguin feeding, go to Brooklyn. Much more audience-friendly.)
