best thing to do is to register the items with your insurance company when you buy them. if you want to do it after the fact and don't have the receipt, you can always get it appraised.

I hope things work out better than expected Betsy.
When we got robbed, the insurance company didn't give us any problems. However, the value of the stolen items was pretty low. They stole a craptastic TV, a 10 year old CD player, a cheap clock, a pillow case, and few other odds of ends of little value.

This reminds me, I need to do another round of photographing my apartment (art & valuables) and put it online somewhere. And send it to the insurance people. The old version I emailed to my dad to keep safe, but that was probably back before I even got a tv. Of course, the stuff I'd really be pissed to lose is the irreplaceable stuff, not the monetarily valuable stuff.

You can get insurance that insures replacement cost instead of current value. That's how ours works.
