We went to Children's Fairyland today (in Oakland, near Lake Merritt. Purportedly Walt's inspiration for Disneyland) because my co-editor begged me to drag Emmett along since adults can't go unattended by a child.
Now I'm at work. Why am I at work on Sunday? Did you see
Punch Drunk Love
and see how Adam Sandler finessed the frequent flyer coupons? Here's the deal. If I work on Sunday, I get time and a half. If I work at least an hour on Sunday, I am credited with four hours of work. It's some whackaloon policy going back to the Puritans I expect, but that's still the firm policy. Consequently one hour of Sunday work equals six hours of salary. It's nutty, but here I am.
Most people don't take advantage of it because they don't live in The City, and the commute time back and forth makes it less of a deal. If it takes you 3 hours to get 4 hours of OT you're only going to do it when you actually have to go in and finish some work.
Damn, I would totally work a couple of hours every Sunday. But then, I kind of liked going in to take care of stuff on the weekend when it's quiet.
Wish I had a couple of hours worth of work to do on Sundays. Or even during the week. My company just had to lay off 3 people and from a place that only has 20 employees, it was a blow.
Oof, quester, that sucks. How are your personal prospects?
In other job news, how do I get the job of being the person at VH1 who sits around thinking of all the "# most [adjective] moments" shows? Because I LOVE THEM.
It's Sunday. I'm at work. This is in no way unusual.
Sorry you had to work today, David [edit: and ND], but that overtime deal is pretty sweet. I'm usually strongly encouraged to make up overtime in time off rather than in extra pay. Stupid nonprofits.
ION, have you all seen spamusement.com? "Poorly-drawn cartoons inspired by actual spam subject lines". Freaking hilarious. A few of my favorites:
Your Managers Don't Have Expertise They Have This.
Did You Know Sprint PCS Did This?
What would you do with your own GPS?
I would probably be one of the last people to go because I'm pretty well cross-trained, and as long as I am willing to answer the phone, I'm indespensible. But, my salary won't be improving any time soon.
And I would feel like a traitor if I left.
thanks, Jesse. I'm glad I have a place like this where I vent the things I don't really want to say out loud.
My sympathies, quester. That's a hard position to be in.
