Spike's Bitches 23: We've mastered the power of positive giving up.
[NAFDA] Spike-centric discussion. Lusty, lewd (only occasionally crude), risque (and frisque), bawdy (Oh, lawdy!), flirty ('cuz we're purty), raunchy talk inside. Caveat lector.
Is there anyone you can borrow from, or untapped credit in the house, perhaps?
t attempts cheer
Nope! And we're still paying off debt from the almost-year I was unemployed between when I was laid off in 2001 and started working again in 2002. Our house-buying timing, frankly, sucked ass. As we'd just bought, we didn't have any savings when I was laid off, AND we'd gone from a cheap apartment to having to make mortgage payments. The whole economy went BOOM! right after we closed, and locally, is only now sort of showing signs of recovery.
Something usually comes through. I'm just feeling very negative about it today.
Anyone have any thoughts? Especially those who have seen the movie...
I'd avoid the movie. I have avoided the movie, because I know it will set off all sorts of things for me. There's no shame in saying that a part of your course will Not Be Good for you, especially when you have an opt-out.
vw, I haven't seen the movie so don't have any comment to make specifically about that, but don't beat yourself up over just thinking about opting out. The prof herself said she'd give you an alternate assignment, so it's not like you'd be opting out altogether; you'd be doing the same amount of the same kind of work, just on a slightly different subject. So please don't go asscapping yourself with the hate, dear!
Also, boo sucks on the less-great-than-expected test score, but a big WOO HOO on the earlier A-. You want to get all asscappy on yourself, do it over the A-.
VW, by all means, opt out. I don't think the things involved in the movie or book would be that distressing for you, but then again, they might. And that should be all the reason you need, especially with the prof being so accomodating.
Sorry about the bad day, vw, but if I'm reading your post right, you went to every class, so one day closer to that iPod! And doing a different assignment is not the same as just opting out. Especially if it's the prof's suggestion.
Maybe wallowing in frustration and worry now will get it out of the way and you can manage more efficiently later, Plei. Power of negative thinking.
HUGE flood in my building.
I miss all the fun.
Pout.
I've seen "Deliverance", and it scared the shit out of me (I had nightmares, but I was too young to have been watching it) but I don't remember anything in it being upsetting to the point of avoiding except on a "if you don't like being scared don't see this" basis.

It could ruin you for banjos forever. There is violence and sexual violence, but I'm not sure it is that graphic by today's standards. The creepy factor holds up particularly well, I'd say. Disturbing film.
You have my sympathies vw. College is a great place to challenge yourself, but not at the expense of your mental well being. I wish there were a way we could know what an experience would be like before hand so we could tell whether it would just disturb and test us, or if it would do us serious harm.
I still have never seen all of Schindler's List because I cannot make it through (what was at the time) the first tape without hysterical crying and days of nihilistic depression. I know people say it's a great movie and it moved them or whatever, but it is not good for me, and I would have no problem taking an alternate assignment in a class where it was part of the classwork to watch that film.
vw, if your professor is offering you a different assignment, I'd say take it. I've only seen bits & pieces of
Deliverance,
but those bits and pieces made me ... uncomfortable, and slightly creeped out.
