If Lucas were to die, I'm sure he'd put all his copyright- and trademark-controlled assets into trust for his kids, and the person who ran that trust would charge billions and billions of dollars for every reference/image/whatever, and get lawsuit-happy against fair uses besides.
Except that Lucas has already opened up the sound files -- light sabers, ship nioses, and laser blasts -- for free to internet filmmakers. That move in particular surprised me, and leads me to believe that ultimately he will allow other film and TV creators to make Star Wars stories.
