That reminds me, while watching 24 last night, or more precisely while watching the preview for next week's 24, DH and I cheered when David Palmer showed up on screen. Made me all nostalgic for Giles' return...

I think with nuns, they're named by the abbess when they enter the convent.
This used to be true but isn't any more. At least not for all orders. And a bunch who weren't originally allowed to pick their own names were later able to do so. Like my great aunt who's original nun name was Mother Kevin but she switched back to her own name sometime in the late 60s / early 70s I think.
