That's a lot of money to shell out after only one seemingly successful phone interview. Shit.
Plus, the deadline is May 1st and it says you can pay a late fee (although I didn't see how much). I'd want more than just an interview before I forked over that much money.
Whoo for the good interview, but I agree them suggesting you shell out $1300 without an actual job offer seems rather crazy.
It's either a sign that the job's pretty much yours for the taking, or that the guy you spoke to is such an asshat as to think nothing of pushing candidates that won't get the job to spend that kind of dough because he wants whichever one he picks prepared in time.
Timelies all!
Welcome Lillian! Congrats to Plei and her DH!
Would you want to move to Florida if you didn't get this job, Wolfram?
FL is in my top 5 places to move, if I had to go. I wouldn't take a bar in most states just for the hell of it. But..
Or are you kind of looking everywhere in the country?
This. And I can't afford to register for 50 state bars on the off chance.
That's a lot of money, Wolfram. If they offerred you the job and you hadn't applied for the bar yet, would you be totally screwed?
Well, the hiring partner wants to push my candidacy forward, but won't do it unless I can show I'm serious about relocating to FL, and he pointed out that not being registered for the July bar means I may not take it until February 2006 and won't be admitted until May 2006. He strongly suggested registering to take the July bar now.
See, what I may do is send him a very professional letter, letting him know I'm committed to moving to FL, but asking him for other suggestions to demonstrate that without shelling out a $1,300.00 Nonrefundable fee. I'll also point out that I can register up until July 1 with "only" a $275.00 late fee, which gives us plenty of time to move forward, and also shows him that I researched this issue right away.
That sounds like an excellent idea, Wolfram.

That's not so bad, especially in the context of how much you have to pay just to take the bar anyway.
Maybe I won't be the only one studying this summer...
Okay, I really liked it better when you were looking in Massachusetts, Wolfram, but that said, I think your idea sounds wise. If you're not otherwise planning to relocate to Florida, it would be ridiculous to shell out that fee.
Congratulations to Plei, Paul, and Lillian!! I can't wait for all these Buffista-babies to get big enough to make their first posts.
Speaking of happy families, I'm flying out to my mom's tomorrow, and finally meeting my soon-to-be-stepfather (they're getting married at the JotP on Thursday) and his daughter. Mom, who swore just last August (right before going on her first date with Wayne) that she would never get married again at her age (65), that she'd just move in with the guy. Guess not! We'll be packing up her house that she just sold, but she's not moving too far away, in fact just down the street into his house, which she's already redecorated since he gave her free rein. She sent out this great picture of the two of them, and they both look very happy, especially her (she's got the biggest grin on her face and has her arms wrapped around his neck).
So, yay Mom and Wayne!!
