Would you want to move to Florida if you didn't get this job, Wolfram?

FL is in my top 5 places to move, if I had to go. I wouldn't take a bar in most states just for the hell of it. But..

Or are you kind of looking everywhere in the country?

This. And I can't afford to register for 50 state bars on the off chance.

That's a lot of money, Wolfram. If they offerred you the job and you hadn't applied for the bar yet, would you be totally screwed?

Well, the hiring partner wants to push my candidacy forward, but won't do it unless I can show I'm serious about relocating to FL, and he pointed out that not being registered for the July bar means I may not take it until February 2006 and won't be admitted until May 2006. He strongly suggested registering to take the July bar now.

See, what I may do is send him a very professional letter, letting him know I'm committed to moving to FL, but asking him for other suggestions to demonstrate that without shelling out a $1,300.00 Nonrefundable fee. I'll also point out that I can register up until July 1 with "only" a $275.00 late fee, which gives us plenty of time to move forward, and also shows him that I researched this issue right away.

If I only had a brain...

That sounds like an excellent idea, Wolfram.

Trust my rage

That's not so bad, especially in the context of how much you have to pay just to take the bar anyway.

Maybe I won't be the only one studying this summer...

What is even happening?

Okay, I really liked it better when you were looking in Massachusetts, Wolfram, but that said, I think your idea sounds wise. If you're not otherwise planning to relocate to Florida, it would be ridiculous to shell out that fee.

We're very stretchy. - Connie Neil

Congratulations to Plei, Paul, and Lillian!! I can't wait for all these Buffista-babies to get big enough to make their first posts.

Speaking of happy families, I'm flying out to my mom's tomorrow, and finally meeting my soon-to-be-stepfather (they're getting married at the JotP on Thursday) and his daughter. Mom, who swore just last August (right before going on her first date with Wayne) that she would never get married again at her age (65), that she'd just move in with the guy. Guess not! We'll be packing up her house that she just sold, but she's not moving too far away, in fact just down the street into his house, which she's already redecorated since he gave her free rein. She sent out this great picture of the two of them, and they both look very happy, especially her (she's got the biggest grin on her face and has her arms wrapped around his neck).

So, yay Mom and Wayne!!

What is even happening?

Oh Kathy, that's so great. My mother says she won't marry again, and I think she probably won't, but I try to make sure she understands it is fine with me.

Yay for well seasoned love. Enjoy the packing, and best wishes to the happy couple.

Compassionately intolerant

Wolfram, I hope this opportunity turns out to be just what you want it to be. And how great for you to be 'short listed'. That must feel good.

I have only one minor addition to what everyone else has said about the letter you propose being a good idea.

You don't actually have to justify your position regarding the 'not wanting to shell out big dough' point. All the employer needs to know is that you are prepared to invest in the bar as soon as an offer is made...regardless of cost.

Of course, it would be GREAT if they'd pay the fee, which they might do once you are on board, but in any case, you are prepared. Period. Your current finances are not their business. What you will DO for them is.

Besides, if the firm needs you to sign in blood that you will risk a large sum of money on spec, what else might they require later?

This is reminding me of...I think it's Shells...were Gunn suggests that the gang doesn't mind Drogan being sacrificed as long as the senior partners won't be wanting another sacrifice later on.

Giving up stuff before you get stuff is a bad precedent in the world of work.

A great, and tragically out of print but still available on the 'nets, book that covers how to negotiate into a job really well: "Contgratulations, You've Been Fired" by Emily Koltnow. Really sound advice.

Greatest luck to you!

What is even happening?

Beej, you just made me want to watch Angel, Season 5. I've been too sad it's gone, to watch my DVDs I got for my birthday in early March. Thanks.

Now let us crush something soft and watch it fountain blood. That is a girlish thing to want to do, yes?

All the best to MomAstrom and Wayne -- they sound wonderful together.
