I don't get usually sleepy during the day. Unless I eat lunch, and that's just a food coma. I've probably been not getting enough sleep during the week for years now, but it doesn't really incline me to nap during the day. Kill people? Sure.
I think my problem is largely attitude. Well, that and stupid brain.

If I could work from home one day every two weeks, I'd be more productive. That's not a promise -- it's just statistics gathered from my last almost-sick day, and a couple mental health days. But my division is incredibly against it, despite predictable portions of my job not requiring face times. I could schedule a day of phone meetings, and take those phone meetings lying down. That would be marvellous.
So far, it works for me, not against me, although I am cheating to make it this way.
ChiKat - I'm exactly the same way as you. I like staying up late, sleeping in, my best hours are in the evening. I don't mind people asking questions when I first get into work, but don't even think of asking me to do anything remotely complex before my first cup of coffee is finished.
I don't like mornings, and am offended if I have to get up before about 8am or so. 6am is an unholy hour, and no reasonable person should ever have to wake that early.
However, I'm not so much cranky in the mornings, as blurry.
Ask meara about how I try to squeeze the sleep out of my head. She and the gf were very amused by this last Sunday morning.
I have to hit snooze at least three or four times in the morning before I have a hope of opening my eyes or forming words. And I'm not so good with sentences until I've had a cup of tea. Or three.
I get a lot of exercise in my job, but I still need some sugary treats at about three in the afternoon to stop me getting dozey. Sour Skittles are my current favourite.

Me too. Morning!Susan has at least 50% more whining and petulance if anything disrupts The Routine.

For me, eating enough the previous day is a huge determiner of my morning alertness or lack thereof. I have granola bars stashed in my nightstand for that very reason.
