"Who ya gonna call? Ghostbusters!"
"No offense, guys, but I gotta get my own lawyer."
"Human sacrifice, dogs and cats living together...mass hysteria!"
"No human being would stack books like this."
"Back off, man, I'm a scientist."
"Yes, it's true. This man has no dick."
"That's a big Twinkie."
"Don't cross the streams!"
"Now there's something you don't see every day."
See, the thing is, I've never seen
Ghostbusters
and thus don't recognize a single one of those quotations (except for "who ya gonna call?") They may be awesome, but I'd expect to recognize most of the "100 greatest quotes," even from movies I haven't seen.
Example: I've never seen Gone with the Wind, but "Frankly my dear, I don't give a damn" I recognize. Never seen Apocalypse Now, but "I love the smell of Napalm in the morning!" yeah, heard it. Never seen, what, Scarface? But "Say hello to my little friend" I've heard. Guessing there's quotes from The Godfather and The Godfather II I've heard, too. Et cetera.
This is why I haven't quoted most of High Fidelity, which has my favoritest quotes of all time. I could, though, if you guys want.
Hmm. This post sounds more didactic than I intended. I probably shouldn't post it. But I'm going to anyway.

I'd say there's a difference between "greatest" and "most recognizable"
Me, I'd say Gris is making me feel old.
Why, cuz I haven't seen those movies? Mostly it's just laziness on my part - I SHOULD see them, I'm sure. All of them. Ghostbusters included.
Anyway, actually looked at the AFI list. Do recognize most of the quotes, though not all of them, and some of them I actually had no idea what movie they were from. Why is "Use the force, Luke" in the top 100 but "No. I am your father!" isn't, I wonder? The second one seems so much more powerful to me.
My new favorite is paraphrasing Jayne, "When'd that get fun?"
You've never seen those movies?!
Although I was late to a lot of them...and in the intervening years the GB ones I remember have dwindled to Zool and the dogs and cats.
See, I am the "right" age for Ghostbusters, and I didn't even recognize that the "dogs and cats" was from Ghostbusters. Which I guess means that it is a quote that has trancended the movie.
