Hmmm. I think I'm more toward the side of no "cool for cool's sake", at least not when you've got such a fantastic cast to play with. I think Hopkins hit the precisely correct notes during the final scene, I'll completely agree with you on Lavinia, and I think the direction Lange took with Tamora was fantastic. That scene in the woods with Demetrius, Chiron, Lavinia, and Tamora was bone-chilling.
I hated the fantastical interludes. Hated. I saw no point to them, and it felt like pandering to the "MTV Generation" in the worst way. Anvils everywhere.

Yeah, if I could remove one thing from the movie, that would be it, for sure. Those were the things that crossed the "cool for cool's sake" line for me.
