I hate Hemingway's writing, but might love a movie about him. He was perfect movie material: fucked up in all the interesting ways.

Love Hemingway. And I actually find him hard to parody *well.* Because his writing style wasn't just simplistic -- it worked to convey what he wanted to convey.
Plus, everyone drinks a LOT, and I like that in my fictional characters.

DH watched the boy so I could catch a movie by myself tonight. I picked Kingdom of Heaven. Thanks so much, Ridley, for stirring up all the simmering ambivlence I have.
It looked great, sounded great and I loved most of the actors in it. I even think they did a good job at getting around actual history to tell the story that they wanted to tell. But it left me all "meh" regarding Balian.
David Thewlis is my new, secret boyfriend, though.

Did anyone else watch Romy and Michele: In the Beginning on ABC Family tonight.
It wasn't nearly as smart, funny, or well-produced as the original film, but it was still a lot of fun. And I like Katherine Heigl (New Romy) and Alex Breckinridge (New Michele), but they aren't as talented as Mira Sorvino and Lisa Kudrow. I think Katherine Heigl would've been more appropriate as Michele, actually, but maybe they cast her as Romy because she looks more like Mira Sorvino.
I'm surprised that ABC Family aired this. I'm sure they only aired it because ABC didn't want to. Early on in the movie, Romy and Michele are inspired by Pretty Woman to earn some quick cash by working as prostitutes. And then they're mistaken for transsexuals because they're wearing really lame wigs. I don't watch ABC Family often—actually, I don't think I've ever even watched ABC Family before—but I'm pretty sure most of their programs don't begin with a "This program is intended for mature audiences" disclaimer or have a TV-14:DLS rating.
And Dania Ramirez (Caridad the Potential Slayer) was in it. So was the guy who played Kevin on Grosse Pointe.
So, yeah, it was fun, but it didn't compare with the original.

Heh. I think most writers and filmmakers wind up putting their kinks on view eventually. Certainly I know how Hitchcock felt about cool blondes and John Updike feels about blowjobs.
