She really isn't that good at it(nor did she think she had to be, I know that) But still.
She thought she had to be. She's a NYC kid who grew up going to Broadway musicals. So she didn't want to sing the part because she knew she didn't have the voice for it. But then she realized some singer was going to be doing all these important, crucial scenes for Buffy and she decided to sack up and do the best she could because that was her character.
I'm sure the Autotune helped her gain confidence.

Well, AH had that option and still wouldn't sing.
So I give SMG props for doing her best by her character, and delivering an excellent performance with what she herself would acknowledge is a limited instrument.
Alyson did say afterward that she wished she'd sung more once she heard how SMG's performances were changed in post-production.
I actually read that AH said something like "If I knew what they could do to a voice, I would have sung."
I don't mind the autotune, really-- would you rather have had her be bad? Although I liked Nick's semi-badness.

I loved that he gave it his all, and really worked the dance routine.

Right, but SMG put it on the line, risking sounding bad before she could hear the final fixed up version. She's the one who took the chance, and a pretty big one for the star of a TV show watched by millions.
She wasn't THAT bad. She sounded like a regular non-professional-singer person, singing. Which I thought was fine, because that's what Buffy was, anyway.

I am assuming that she must have been actually bad in order for the autotune to only make her sound like a regular person, but maybe I am misunderstanding autotune. Does it actually fix your pitch (which to me means she is "bad") or does it also make your voice sound more pleasant? I am coming at this as a regular person singer who is always on key, but I don't really have the prettiest voice.
autotune can't work miracles, or I would be on the pop charts right now.

Autotune can fix issues with pitch (and punch up weak or breathy sounding voices, IIRC), but it can't add warmth or other things that make "pretty" voices.
