I've never heard that either, and I was a big Dawson's Creek fan, too. Not saying it isn't true, but it seems like if it was, I would have heard it somewhere. Also, DC started before Buffy, I think, so she would have been booked already.
Also, I love Katie Holmes, and even like her as an actress, but that would have been horrible!

it premiered in 98. i remember these crazy things based on college. i watched the premiere in my boyfriend's dorm room.

This article I saw claimed she was offered the role and turned it down to finish high school. Then she got Dawson's when she graduated. I so can't picture her as Buffy.
ETA: This makes more sense (from her IMDB entry)
Auditioned for the role as Buffy Summers in the series "Buffy the Vampire Slayer" (1997), but was too young.
