Well it struck me as odd when he used it that way, but it didn't strike me as unprecedented. I could be misremembering.

Yeah, I see it used as a term for Buffy fans in general from time to time. I know it was at TeeVee.org recently. And Google turns up "Buffista" on Usenet back in 1998.
