I watched the first 2 episodes of Hex and I'd say a serious Charmed is a good, quick explanation of it. Although Charmed had better character development.
Pretty scenery, not much character development yet, plot is plodding. It has had a couple of spooky moments, but not anything to the level of The Gentlemen (who are, arguably, the creepiest monsters on Buffy).
I think Hex is still trying to build its backstory and its world and is trying to stretch out the revelations and not shoot its wad all at once. That, however, is just dragging the show down. It needs some Stuff to Happen so that we can get to know the characters and start to care about what happens to them. Right now, I don't care about them.

I only watched the pilot of Hex. I wanted to like it, because, I don't know, witches, Nephilim, ghosts, I usually enjoy that stuff. But it was boring. I kept checking the time to see how much longer I had to go. And, since I don't care what happens to the characters, that was the end of that.

Interesting. It does have some mild spoilers for DW S2, but nothing I hadn't figured out from general online fandom. I like her discussion of why Daleks were the best bad guys. I haven't seen enough of the Tenth Doctor to get a feel for him, yet.

Hex isn't really horror since it's not scary, but Buffy wasn't horror either, so... I dunno. They both look like fantasy/horror to me.
Just to be clear, I don't think Hex is particularly good, from the little I've seen. But I think it's possible that someone who found most of the characters on Buffy to be, say, incredibly off-putting, might find the ones on Hex a bit easier to take. Hypothetically. That Times review that said "if you couldn't get into Buffy, you might like this" made a certain amount of sense. And by the same token, I could see where, if Buffy was your catnip, Hex probably wouldn't be.

I would agree with that statement. Very different shows within that genre, but the same genre.

The vast majority of reviews I've seen have said, basically, "If you miss Buffy, Hex will give you back Willow and Giles, plus sexy lesbian ghosts." The comparisons haven't gone much further than that. I think BtVS is getting mentioned more than Charmed because reviewers are assuming that nobody misses Charmed.

More mysterious but still somewhat frustrating is "Hex" (9 p.m. Thursday, BBC America). It has been promoted as the British "Buffy the Vampire Slayer," but it doesn't quite live up to that billing.
