That's putting it mildly...
(And was a recurring problem with the original series, much though I adore it -- they kept finding populated planets, which made the whole "humanity completely wiped out" premise less than convincing. The current crop of Cylons were much more thorough.)

I finally got around to watching my tape of the S2 marathon, and yes, it did go up by around 1400. I found myself writing down the number and seeing if it works with the previously ons (the ep after they killed off Zarek's two henchmen, the number went down by two--very cool!).
