there's one episode where Duncan just pulls his sword from off-screen like some kind of cartoon character with a mallet. At least the coat thing kind of makes sense if you don't think about it too hard.
I think I've heard "where Duncan keeps his sword" fanwanked as "katana space".
It's that kind of magic.
Now I want to see scenes where they grab lights and boom mikes from out of frame and use them in the fight.

Most of the military stuff with the screens and the translator were at UNIT HQ. Torchwood only really had the Big Gun at the end.
UNIT, of course, being involved with aliens, including The Doctor, since the 70's.

I've heard it called "sword space", but yeah. I think most fans just accept it as another of the ill-defined Immortal powers. (Such as Duncan killing assorted Immortals with wierd little "magical" abilities, but never exhibiting them himself later. Meanwhile in the "Final Dimension" movie the bad guy gains the powers of an Immortal sorcerer by killing him.)
The Mage RPG from White Wolf had a rote (spell) called "Spatial Sheathe" that did the same thing, undoubtably inspired by the show.
ETA: Of course, in another book they had an infamous rant about the illogic of carrying swords in the modern world. They weren't known for their internal consistancy.
My son wants to know why the sword of Lucas, the dead civil war guy, crackled with lightning on his grave. My son thought he was maybe partly beheaded and was coming back. I said, "Naah, just dramatic special effects."
I've always thought that if I were an Immortal I'd be all over firearms. I mean, what is this swordfighting crap? Come on.
Really. Shoot 'em from a distance, then behead the corpse.
