It's actually a very simple proof, resting on two things: the definition of a rational number (which is a number that can be represented as the ratio of two whole numbers, a/b) and the fact that the square root of an even number is also an even number (which I can also prove, if you'd like). From there, it's just arithmetic with variables (or, uh, I guess you could call that algebra).

My question for the parents out there.

In my neighbohood we have a park. It has a 10 mile trail that goes out to the bay. picnic areas and public restrooms. tennis courts. children's play area. and homeless people. There are now a lot of moms that won't go to the park - they are scared. There have been NO violent crimes. There are property crimes commited - which may or may not be connected to the homeless. and there are other things such as public drunkenenss and public urination.

Alone, I walk through the park at all times of day. I have never been bothered. I do know people that have had comments made to them.

The moms will no longer go to the park.

While I understand the wish to protect thier children - I think they have ceeded the park to the homeless, the drug dealers, the gangs and anyone else that doesn't care to have thier activities observed.

I suggested that they should take back the park - go in large groups - be visible be present.

eta : the question. no violent incidents. about 10 street people. am I crazy in thinking that numbers of moms ( and dads ) and singles would create saftey and open the park back up to use by everyone? without seriously endangering your kids?

My mom is very good at having two diametrically opposed feelings at once.

One is how very proud she is that we have left home and made our own lives in Holland and Maryland and California.

That's what I got from your earlier post, Deena. I'm glad that you'rre excited fro him, that seeme right to me. And, remembering when my older brother moved out, you'll probably still see him pretty often what with laundry and meals and him just getting a little homesick sometimes.

Beth, as a mom, I feel my primary responsibility is to my kid, not to society. So I'm not going to take my kid to a park where he/she may see a homeless man peeing, even if my taking the kid to the park makes it a better place.

I may add that my experience in the streets of San Francisco does not lead me to believe that population density prevents homeless people from doing anything at all.

This would be frustrating. I can see where people would hesitate if there were violent crimes taking place. But it doesn't sound like this is the case. If I had to plan my life to avoid homeless people, I'd never leave my apartment so maybe I'm just more used to dealing with the situation than your neighbors.

Yeah, in the East. But I don't think they're a lock for the pennant or WS. They've both had radical revamps from last season. Mind, the Yankees are now sporting an All-Star at almost every position, and then they added Randy Johnson.

I agree that the Skankees are the team to beat in the AL, although the Red Sox will be good and Anaheim look pretty good too, if a little shakier. In the NL? Much more open, I'd hazard. Some mags are expecting the Braves to drop as far as fourth, which is crazy talk, I think.
