I only read the first page where people were criticizing the Reaver/Native American analogy.
I was confused by this, so I checked myself. AICN first made this claim.
Huh.

I guess I can see how they could be read like that. I don't know if that was the intent, though.
I think Joss pretty much came out and said that the Reavers were analgous to old-school Western movie Indians. They weren't meant to be related to actual Native Americans, but rather the "savage outsiders" of the genre.
Yeah. He says as much in the commentary on the pilot. I can see why people were critical because they'd assume it was an analogy entire instead of just analogy of one aspect (that which whoops and paints its face and cuts off your scalp for no discernible reason). Injuns, not Indians (much less Native Americans).
Everyone here has already probably already seen it, but just in case, here's a link to Joss's Equality Now speech, at YouTube: [link]
I've transcribed it, for people who can't watch it for some reason (and/or hear it): [link]
Thanks, Cindy. I think Joss needs to be on TED 2007
t after further contemplation...
Introduced by Meryl Streep? Fuck your Emmys and Oscars. That is the ultimate.
Well, I was going to see The Devil Wears Prada anyway, but now I have another reason/excuse to do so. Meryl Streep rocks.

You know, I was sort of thinking the same thing.
I was too, at first, and then she used the sort of voice adult phonies use when speaking to kids, and I suddenly didn't like her any more. Then I liked her even less while transcribing, because I am slow and had to listen to it over and over again.
