I even knew Dave Denman played Roy, and Dave Denman played Skip, but never put the two things together. I just knew the name "Dave Denman" sounded familar (in article about Roy) until tiggy made her lj entry.
Firefly 4: Also, we can kill you with our brains
Discussion of the Mutant Enemy series, Firefly, the ensuing movie Serenity, and other projects in that universe. Like the other show threads, anything broadcast in the US is fine; spoilers are verboten and will be deleted if found.
Warning: boring post about Serenity.
Skip it. Really.
Universal got 45% of the domestic gross of Serenity - about $11.5m. Internationally, UIP released it, who (and this bit isn't an official figure, but I gather it's the case) take about another 10% (so 55% total). So, internationally, $7.33m.
In total, that's $18.83m, from a production budget of $40m. The production budget obviously has domestic and international marketing costs on top, along with distribution (which will be around $7m). Looking at around $57m.
So, all in all, at the box office Serenity took about a third of it's overall budget.
Now, there's DVD sales on top of that, however the DVD also had marketing and production costs.
An average movie makes about 60% of it's overall money -- apparently (that's a commonly quoted figure) -- from DVD sales.
Tamara is spot on about DVD sales, licensing (games, books, TV airings etc) -- once it's totalled on, it'll break even in the next few years.
The thing is, the reason Garfield is getting a sequel is this -- it make a shit load of money. Probably $400m+ profit for the studio (with DVD sales, Garfield toy licensing etc). Does anybody know anybody who liked it? I don't. Did people see it? Yep. 'cause, you know, it's Garfield.
Serenity isn't a total bomb for Universal, it got good reviews and such, and you know - no overall money loss. It could have done much worse.
Kevin, not boring at all.
Also, I kinda liked Garfield. A little. Not enough for a sequel though.
I was amused in places by Garfield, but overall I thought it fell well short of the potential.
Jenna Fisher has done a mockumentary film (available on DVD) with James Gunn. The DVD extras have loads of material from the Slither shoot the cast took, which includes bits with Nathan. For some reason he has his hair LIKE THIS. Ie gelled up straight.

LolliLove
HEEE!
Is that James Gunn in the back?
there are pictures of James and Jenna here. (you might need a myspace account to see them.)
Didn't see Slither, but NF looks so adorably geeky in that picture that I just might have to. He really can change his look quite dramatically, can't he.
He doesn't have that hair in Slither, he's just goofing around.
