Firefly 4: Also, we can kill you with our brains
Discussion of the Mutant Enemy series, Firefly, the ensuing movie Serenity, and other projects in that universe. Like the other show threads, anything broadcast in the US is fine; spoilers are verboten and will be deleted if found.
As I understand it, with the actual US test screenings, they made some radical cuts to try to up the audience reaction to things. Example, one of them where The Operative barely speaks the entire film.
The very early cuts I saw of the movie, it wasn't nearly finished. "VFX MISSING" plastered across the screen and such.
The March screening had Mr Universes jokes back in, and Rivers "I'm the brains of the operation" line whilst wearing the goggles at the beginning, which was brilliant. Although totally off if you weren't a fan, I suspect. I've never seen Jayne's "double dickless" joke in any of the cuts, which is a shame - I bet Adam Baldwin nailed the lines.
ETA: Also, I wanted Mals "fucking shoot you down" line back. Sob. With the body throwing at the crew. Dark Mal! Dark Mal!
Where were those Dark Mal lines/scenes, Kevin? I don't recall them from the script in the Visual Companion.
I missed the kuffle. Thankfully. Kuffles of whatever strength are why I try to avoid being in a fandom. Folks tend to bicker, and bickering makes me upset, even when I'm not involved. (Not talking about this particular kuffle, which was quite a restrained one, but fandom kuffles in general.) Actually, that may be why I tend to avoid unnecessary human contact... I'll just be over here.
I'm with you Kevin on the "fucking shoot you down" line. I thought that was one of the most powerful and terrifying moments of the film.
Zenkitty, it is when Mal is telling the crew to help him or take their leave on Haven. That scene was lightened up. A lot.
See, if the above kuffle had been done face to face, I can guarentee it wouldn't have been a big issue, and gone on for about 2 minutes. Online sites exaggerate everything.
Awww, don't tell me all the good shit I missed by not being close to a screening! Let me find out with the DVDs. (just kidding)
Online sites exaggerate everything
Heh. Kevin, I like you. But the way you word things sometimes....
I think, because the amount of time it takes to make a post and the fact only one person at a time is talking, anything from a fuff, to a kuffle to a kerfuffle can last a long virtual time. Thus, lending a feeling of exaggerated feeling to it. To say that "online sites exaggerate everything,"....may I bonk you, now?
I don't have the benefit of notepad, F2F.
Serenity is still showing at some theaters in Philadelphia, Trenton, and New York. And North Bergen, NJ, for some reason. But none of those palces are close enough for me to be able to justify going there just to see a movie I've already seen four times. I should have gone yesterday, but I foolishly believed it would be here another week.
It's possible that having to express all one's thoughts in writing without the natural aid of body language and facial expression to make oneself clear is what makes online kerfuffles out of things that would be minor puffs of fuff in real life.
I don't even deal well with the minor RL fuffs, though. My stress levels go way up when I perceive others to be fighting. I don't get people who enjoy stirring up arguements, or watching them. (Not meaning to say that anyone here did that.) (It's also tiring, sometimes, to carry on online conversations of any kind, because I feel I have to be so very clear about what I'm trying to say and
not
say, because by the time one can explain oneself, the moment has passed and someone is already insulted. Or something. Oh, hell, you all know what I'm talking about. I hope.)
See, if the above kuffle had been done face to face, I can guarentee it wouldn't have been a big issue, and gone on for about 2 minutes.
True. I think everyone would have just walked away from you when you started doing airquotes around our names.
Quote marks!
Bonking.. I'm presuming you aren't British, SailAweigh. Or maybe you are.
I word things badly. Actions do get exaggerated online with people you don't know. There's some moments upthread where you can see me jumping off the deep end with people, and people jumping off the deep end with me over things which shouldn't happen if we knew each other.
Buffistas is a very insular community. People tend to know each other. I know, for example, Jars. And Jars knows me. So she was able to say to me tonight the equilivent of 'Shut the fuck up'. And that's cool. If you know somebody to an extent, you know more of where they are coming from. So Kuffles don't tend to happen. But when you have 'fresh blood' (remember the bit about wording things badly?) it can rock the boat because they don't know anybody, and nobody knows them.
Or something. I know what I mean.
