I think people get to call themselves what they want to and I follow what they call themselves, even when they change it on me mid friendship.

What if they change it, and then change it back, and go by the full name, unless ita is the one to shorten it?
I work with middle school kids, right? Very few people change their names more than they do.
Notice I know you, I know your real name, I've seen the iterations and here, yet I still I address you how you want to be addressed.
I would never think to write about you as "Perkins" because it's a giant fuck you. The quotation marks are about questioning your ability to define your persona.

It's like a peculiar compulsion that chops the word off 50% of the time I try and type it. I can't help myself.
I honestly don't mind the Perk, though I think frequent Perks or Perky would bug. If they did, I would say so.
