Huh. So it turns out my friend David made The Dress*, and all the other costumes in the movie.
Sweetie, would you please ask him what fabric was used for The Dress? It would make a couple of seamstresses I know very happy.

Costumes made for film and TV are typically not very good clothes. Partially because they are only assembled as much as needed (leaving inside seams undone, and such that contributes to short clothing lifespans), and partially because the fabrics that look amazing on film are typically not used for normal clothing because they are either too flimsy to stand up to normal use, or nasty sythetic fibers that don't feel good to the skin, and don't breathe well.
