Saw Serenity and enjoyed it muchly.
What really remained with me were the little directorial flourishes that I think mark Whedon for greatness. Like the push-in on River putting a gun to her head when she suggests committing suicide to Simon. Or the camera slowly coming into focus on Zoe's face, after Jayne uses Serenity Valley to make a point about Mal's leadership skills.
Also, I wasn't down with the explanation for the Reavers 'cause it guts the thematic content of 'Bushwacked' and that was the part of the episode I admired most.
Well, that makes sense. But I wasn't planting my hopes on a sequel. It would have been nice, sure. I just think that after spending six months reading about how people AREN'T going to the theatre anymore and the reasons behind it and the horrible BO revenues, I'm not surprised.
But then I look and see that someone made DOOM into a film starring THE ROCK and go back to thinking the world is an unjust place.
I think a lot of fans wanted to believe it was going to be a huge blockbuster success that would spawn several sequels and/or a return to the small screen.
As for all the press about this crisis at the box office, John August had a very interesting entry about the “slump.”

I love this part:
Journalist: “Would you say the slump was caused because the movies were awful?”
Executive: “Umm, maybe. I guess.”
Journalist: “No, seriously. Say it.”
I didn't think that Serenity sucked. I think that it might not have a broad enough appeal to reach the numbers that it needs to be considered a blockbuster event. And that's too bad.
I know! That was hilarious because I could picture it.

Despite the success of the Star Wars and Star Trek franchises, science fiction movies are actually pretty rarely blockbusters.
I just came from watching Serenity. It broke me.
goddamn you to hell, Joss Whedon!
I am NOT getting over this.

By that you mean the directing, right?
You know, in thinking about this, it occurs to me that some of the "hand wringing" could be due to all the advance screenings and how far out they were from the theatrical release. A lot of the hardcore fans saw the movie (perhaps more than once) months ago. So they've already had their happy squee moment and, now, are over that and looking ahead to more.
I've also wondered if there would have been more or less momentum for the film had Universal done the screenings closer to the release. It's certainly been an interesting experiment to watch.

Or maybe the interrogation scenes. Or the shot of River being so happy to see the vastness of outer space (that was directing!).
Also, I think my very favorite part of that whole episode is the guy looking for River and Simon...under a placemat.
