'Objects In Space'
Discussion of the Mutant Enemy series, Firefly, the ensuing movie Serenity, and other projects in that universe. Like the other show threads, anything broadcast in the US is fine; spoilers are verboten and will be deleted if found.

I think it's way odd that so many people are admitting to being scared away from the movie by other people. See the damn movie if you want, skip it if you want, but the existence of Browncoats? They're not in the movie. Get over it.
A friend just told me "It's weird when fans name themselves."
"Uh, D, I'm a
Buffista."
"I know!" she said. "But that's different somehow!"
"Because we don't have a dress code?"
"That could be it."
Genre fans in glass houses shouldn't throw stones?

I think fans of anything can be overzealous at times. I just think the Browncoats are making more noise than anyone esle right now because of the movie release and the whole feeling of redemption after being "done wrong" over Firefly.
That's not to say I haven't seen or read about Browncoats behaving in a fashion I find embarassing, but I've seen the same among the fans of just about everything I've liked at one time or another.

Agreed. They're just fans--extreme fans, maybe--but it's kind of shitty to be agressively prejudiced against them if they're not tugging on your sleeves in line or getting in your face about how great the film is.
And if said agressiveness is online--it's even easier to avoid. I don't frequent the official site and I don't post at any browncoats sites.

'K, that made me laugh out loud.

Yeah but, from what I've seen, the issue is that some people feel like they can't escape the "Browncoats." That's the complaint I've heard from CHUD and AICN and, even, people on LJ. That threads and discussions that have nothing to do with FF or Serenity are getting hijacked by certain people calling themselves Browncoats. I can see where it would get a bit irritating.

Well those people should just stop their bitchin' and let themselves be assimilated....
I can see where it would get a bit irritating.
What does that have to do with seeing the movie? Will not seeing it make the Browncoats go away? If you did want to see the movie, and you let non-movie things like that that you can't affect turn you off, it looks a bit weak to me.
the rabid Firefly fans have sure as hell scared me off seeing the movie.
All the loud and enthusiastic Firefly-quoting and squeeing about Serenity on my f'list have made me wary as hell about watching the movie.
What the hell? Scared? Wary?
The squeeing doesn't mean a thing about the quality.
Maybe I'm just better at compartmentalising, but fandom's never kept me away from anything I was interested in.

I can see how if you were on the fence or lukewarm about something and you felt constantly barraged by a group of people saying, "This is the greatest movie EVAH. You must see it. It will change your life," it might push you from lukewarm to ice cold. It's just a backlash.
