a tagline—"The Future is Worth Fighting For"—that was vague and recalled The X-Files movie's "Fight the Future."
I forgot about the tagline! Yeah, I thought that tag was not evocative, if not completely stupid.

At the very least, it doesn't tie itself to the movie.
Unlike "Can't stop the signal" -- it mightn't make sense unless you're a fan or have seen the movie, but at least it's more different.
It makes sense in the context of the ending, since the crew suddenly turns out to be interested in saving the universe. But the advertising, as I recall, pointed up the fact that they were space pirates. Or at least, I wish it had said that. Anyway, not so much Star Wars-esque freedom fighters as mercenaries.
Similar plot elements between Serenity and Fifth Element:
Hot girl who kicks lots of ass and has crazy powers
Also, hot/crazy girl has a big secret that reveals a larger, "bigger-than-the-rest-of-us-put-together" secret that involves a race against time and pursuers.
don't forget the Black man who high-talks and acts crazy. Oh. I guess that's just The Fifth Element, huh?
Universal isn't exactly the studio of note when it comes to space operas and similar genre pictures, with disappointments ranging from Buck Rogers in the 25th Century to The Chronicles of Riddick.
Buck Rogers was a disappointment?

Far less time than Dominar Rygel. Although I suspect Jayne would have taken Twiki out first.
Mal: Anyone seen our robot?
Jayne [hides smoking Twiki part behind his chair]: We got a robot?
