Are they really trying to argue that River = Milla Jovavich?
Well, they both employed dance-fu. And isn't there a big flobotanum ray or some such that goes out at the end of TFE?
Tonally I'd say they've got nothing in common, but basic plot structure isn't that far off. Although now I'm imagining either Simon or Jayne in Chris Tucker's wardrobe and snerking massively.
but basic plot structure isn't that far off.
Um.
Yeah, I'm not seeing it. And I kind of like The Fifth Element.
I like The Fifth Element too. It's not profound or anything, but it's a lot of fun.
a tagline—"The Future is Worth Fighting For"—that was vague and recalled The X-Files movie's "Fight the Future."
I forgot about the tagline! Yeah, I thought that tag was not evocative, if not completely stupid.
I thought that tag was not evocative, if not completely stupid.
At the very least, it doesn't tie itself to the movie.
Unlike "Can't stop the signal" -- it mightn't make sense unless you're a fan or have seen the movie, but at least it's more different.
It makes sense in the context of the ending, since the crew suddenly turns out to be interested in saving the universe. But the advertising, as I recall, pointed up the fact that they were space pirates. Or at least, I wish it had said that. Anyway, not so much Star Wars-esque freedom fighters as mercenaries.
Similar plot elements between
Serenity
and
Fifth Element:
- Gruff guy with a heart of gold who understands the world and will gladly fight against the law to protect his charge.
- Hot girl who kicks lots of ass and has crazy powers.
- Bit in the trailer where techno-ish music provides a choreographed background to major ass-kicking of many opponents by super-cool hot girl
- Grittyish future - not Star Trek polished, if not Bladerunner-dark either.
- Powerful, no-morals nemesis guy.
- Simple, basic morals: The Truth is Important vs. Love Conquers All
Hot girl who kicks lots of ass and has crazy powers
Also, hot/crazy girl has a big secret that reveals a larger, "bigger-than-the-rest-of-us-put-together" secret that involves a race against time and pursuers.
don't forget the Black man who high-talks and acts crazy. Oh. I guess that's just The Fifth Element, huh?
Universal isn't exactly the studio of note when it comes to space operas and similar genre pictures, with disappointments ranging from Buck Rogers in the 25th Century to The Chronicles of Riddick.
Buck Rogers was a disappointment?
