See, that's the part I never understand: that Kaylee can cut the tentacle thing from inside the ship which causes it to fall away. If the tentacle can breach the hull then they'd decompress.

There were two, Book and Mal (some might say three: Book, Mal (fast) and Mal (slower)). The VOs ran when the series was originally aired, but were dropped on the DVDs.
