It's a flashback and Joss is retconning Simon into having rescued River directly instead of paying to have her smuggled out.

I think River was already in cryo before Simon picked her up. IIRC.

That's what I meant. But the scene from the trailer with River in the chair of doom and Simon with the flashy thing suggests either another rescue or a retconn of the original.

Oh. See, I don't see a flashback contradicting something in an episode to be a retconn, just bad continuity. Unless, say, it turns out that Simon lied in the pilot episode. Maybe my definition of 'retconn' is too restrictive?

A possible flashback in the trailer would (if it was a flashback) contradict the scene in the pilot (the original, two hour one) where Simon says he paid folks to put River in cryo and ship her to him.

I really do think it has the potential to be the next Star Wars, seriously.

I myself prefer to imagine it as Star Trek. Cancelled show, groundswell of fans, so many movies it starts getting sketchy (WHALES?), etc.

I haven't watched it recently (i.e. in the last few hours) so I'm not sure exactly what scene that is.
