I think it varies by company.
GEICO has been good to me. Other insurance companies have required me to send them photos of the old car I wanted to insure, or even have it inspected. GEICO didn't require anything like that for my '73 Mercury.
Where you live has a lot to do with how much you pay in car insurance.
There's a biggish uproar here now because of how Baltimore city residents have to pay so much more for car insurance than anybody else in Maryland. I don't expect that will change anytime soon though. We do tend to have our cars broken into and/or stolen quite a bit here.

We have Progressive, mostly because they have beem good to us. We went thru a string of accidents and only saw raises in our rates because we bought new vehicles. Plus , they are easy to deal with.
I'm not going to be able to make it Saturday night. I just got informed that I am "not allowed to make plans" for that night. Cause, you know, my birthday is a few days after that, and well, who knows what the family might be planning, and, ummmm, do I really want to know more than that? Translation - someone is planning to "surprise" me.

Yep. Ah, well, I'll take that in a tradeoff. We may have crappy insurance laws, but we have gay marriage! (I don't think there is a connection though)
