If you teach a room (or a generation) of students to do one things specifically, and that is pass some dumbass standards test, and don't expect them to learn anything else, where's the surprise?

Even without the stupidity of much of the current testing, teachers can only teach so much, and most value judgements are learned not in school, but in the home.
