I think you ought to ask. It's not an inappropriate question, given that he can't give you a quote. (I used to be an Actual Journalist, with the interviewing and the writing and the glayvin, and really, rule #1 is Just Ask. It can't hurt, and it may well help.)

Is the rationale because journalism is supposed to be immediate and present tense, so having someone say something right now is more effective than quoting what someone wrote in the past, even the recent past?
