Hammers are good things. We like hammers. We like multi-head screwdriver sets even more, but we need hammers to start the holes for screws to go into.

grew up using a nail, soap, and a hammer instead of a drill. This would be why I like power tools to this day.

But actually? I think it's because I can use a butter knife as a screwdriver, but a hammer makes a difference.
You know what is also oddly useful? A rubber mallet.

Also, silver hammers are useful for escaping punishment by teachers and the legal system.
Crescent wrench. I've seen them used as a hammer by many a stage hand.

I can't tell you how often I've wished I had a rubber mallet. Useful things, they are. Or seem to be when you don't have one, anyway.
You really have to store them someplace low or well secured. Dropping a mallet on your toes hurts much much much worse than a hammer.
