I can see Rick James being too new -- that's why my parents missed the funk.
Also, I just learned Monday that Peter Tosh's name used to be McIntosh. I can't decide if I should feel ridiculous for not knowing that.
And I realized that in order to properly pay bills, I had to get my spreadsheet from the other computer, so I just copied everything over. Dude. All the files I had on my old computer -- photos, papers, whatever -- fit on my thumb drive. Technology is amazing.
Your parents are all FAR too hip. My dad knows from Artie Shaw. And, um, he probably knows who the Beatles are. But once I was listening to the Hothouse Flowers, and he asked me if that was Elvis Presley.
He does know Eva Cassidy, though. ::shrugs::
I'm not asking them to snort coke with him backstage. Just to have heard of him, say, and maybe know he's not white.
Fair enough. Every now and again,my mother surprises me by knowing who some musician I'm listening to is.
My parents' main pop-music gap is from after they became grownups until I got old enough to listen to it myself. Which makes a lot of sense to me, as I barely know what's going on in pop music anymore, and don't see that becoming any less over the next 40 years.

I get that. I think my mom even knows who Rick James was.
But...who is Eva Cassidy?
Actually, I think my mom had a Rick James album in the early eighties. Huh. Repressed memory.
My Dad, while not into funk, was surprisingly modern on his music selections. It's his fault that I can sing almost every song by the Eagles, Lynard Skynard and Steve Miller having grown up with it.
Note: I didn't say his taste was good.
Eva Cassidy is a jazz/blues singer from the US who has a lovely voice. She became moderately successful in the UK before dying unexpectedly a few years back.
My parents aren't really clueful on anything post-1975 that isn't folk, classic country (think Cash) or...well, like Alison Kraus (sp) and backwoods blues. They know their music well, but anything else?
Sometimes my father tries to hold forth on rap and hip hop and I about blow a gasket. And *I* don't know much rap or hip hop, but enough to know he is talking out of his ass. And has not listened to any of it in, oh, the past 15 years. But he's all about holding strong opinions on things he knows nothing about.
Fighting with snapfish now. Thinking I'll go back to ofoto, cause it ain't working....
